Seminars by Tom Lang

I teach seminars on the jo and on stick (hanbo) and cane techniques.  The seminars are based on my books on these topics.

Seminars on Stick (Hanbo) and Cane Techniques

These seminars are based on my book, The Stick and Cane in Close Combat.  The full seminar of all 120 jointlocks, takedowns, surprise attacks, rolls, strikes, and exercises runs about 12 hours (over 2 or 3 days), given practice time for each technique.   Shorter seminars are available; just tell me what you’d like to see and how much time you’d like to spend.

My primary goal in teaching these techniques is to develop precision, balance, and motor skills, as opposed to their combative applications, and so stress correct posture, movement, and body mechanics.

Please contact me for availability and costs.

Seminars on 4-Foot Staff (Jo) Techniques

These seminars are based on my book, The Jo: The Japanese Short Staff.  I divide instruction into several parts: basic actions (striking, thrusting, sweeping, and receiving); modern training exercises; short forms (suburi); long forms (kata); and free-flowing training exercises.  Most of the techniques come from aikijo—the use of the 4-foot staff in aikido—although I also teach some techniques from jodo, a martial art dedicated to the jo.

As above, my primary interest in teaching these techniques is to develop precision, balance, and motor skills, as opposed to combative applications.  Thus, I teach mostly individual practice forms, as opposed to paired practice forms or sparring.
